Birjand
City in eastern Iran with 10,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) lying on low hills in a barren valley 1455 metres above sea level in southern Khorasan Province. Birjand is an important regional centre of some agriculture and pasturage.Birjand use local wool for a large-scale production of carpets. Historically, Birjand has been the seat of semi-independent rulers and a centre for caravans. Being close to the Afghanistan border, Birjand is located on the "Silk Road" of opium smuggled from Afghanistan on the way to Europe (also dubbed the "opium crescent").
The city has a dry climate with significant difference between day and night temperatures. It is a fast growing city, thus becoming one of the major centres in the East of Iran.
Bijard is known mainly for its carpet weaving. Birjand's carpet is famous and is known internationally as "Mood Carpet". Mood is the name of a region in Birjand and the carpet weaving style is unique in that region, the style is also practiced in other cities such as
Nehbandan, Ghaen and part of Ferdous. In addition, most of the rugs, in the region, are woven in the villages around Birjand.
